Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
