The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
