Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
