Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
