The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device
It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story film debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang
The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he grew up — getting a latest toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Last Installment
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the badge attached to her shirt.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
