"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos often depict them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to form a group."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.

Yet the band will forever be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
